Cable Modem Troubleshooting Tips

Follow these instructions when you are having problems with your cable modem.

Step 1. Shut your computer off.

Step 2. Pull the power cord out from the back of the cable modem and wait about 1 minute, then plug it back in. At this point wait about 2-3 minutes check your lights on the modem to make sure they match up with the list below (Not waiting may cause your modem to fail on reset; you have to give the modem some time before booting up your computer)

Properly ramped up cable modem light pattern:

  • Power - will be solid green
  • Receive - will be solid green
  • Send - will be solid green
  • Online - will be solid green
  • Activity - will flash orange

Step 3. Restart your computer.

Did that fix the problem?

  • Yes - Your problem is solved
  • No - Go to Step 4

Step 4. Checking your IP Address.

  1. Windows 95/98/ME - Click your start button in the lower left corner of your screen. Then click run. In the box type winipcfg and press enter. A small window should appear. Choose your Ethernet card or USB depending on how your cable modem connects to your computer. Look for the IP address line, it should read 24.229.?.? or 24.238.?.? the last 2 digits will vary.
  2. Windows XP/2000 - Click start and then run and type in cmd. When the DOS screen comes up type ipconfig/all look for the ip address line it should read either 24.229.?.? or the 24.238.?.?. If not you can try a Ipconfig/release and then a ipconfig/renew.

At this time if you still do not have a 24.229. or a 24.238 address call PenTeleData's tech support at 1-800-804-5783.

Know your cable modems model (ex. Com21 or Surfboard). Also have your modems MAC address found on the bottom of the modem. All MAC addresses will have 12 digits both letters and numbers and will be in this format: ( 000a.0000.0000 ).
