In May of 1953 Peter Walsonavich founded CATV Service, one of the pioneering cable systems in the country. He started the service with three network affiliate broadcast stations that served Danville, PA. By 1955 the service territory expanded to include the neighboring towns of Milton, Lewisburg, and Watsontown while increasing channel capacity to five channels. In 1959 Mr. Walsonavich was the first to make use of terrestrial microwave radio frequencies to import independent TV broadcast stations from New York. This technical advancement brought major league baseball, among other programming, from the city into the living rooms of rural PA.
Today, the CATV Service cable system utilizes over 700 miles of coaxial and fiber optic cable. That is the distance from Danville to Chicago! Available cable services now include over 240 diversified broadcast, satellite, digital, premium, pay-per-view and music channels. Many HD Channels, including all the local broadcast stations with Dolby digital sound are offered bringing the ultimate television experience to your home. Dual-tuner DVR Service is also available. These DVR's bring you the freedom to record and watch two shows at the same time plus control live TV, meaning that you can pause and rewind your favorite shows. No longer will you miss a contestant's performance on American Idol to answer the phone or refresh your glass!
These 700 miles of cable not only deliver television signals to the home, but in partnership with PenTeleData, also provide High Speed Internet Service. This method of getting online allows for download speeds up to 7Mbps without tying up a phone line, which means no missed calls and a reliable, always on connection for the Internet.
In 2008, CATV Service officially launched its residential Digital Phone service. In cooperation with Ironton Telephone we provide our customers with clear, secure local and long distance telephone service. This addition completes the communications trifecta consisting of video, data and voice services, giving our customers the advantage of bundling up their communication services. You can choose to have one, two or all three of these services. The more you bundle, the more you save!
In addition to providing television and telecommunications services for over 18,000 homes, schools, businesses and healthcare facilities, CATV Service has the unique ability to produce truly local television programming including news, high school sports, community events and municipal meetings through its local origination channel, CCN - Your Community Cable Network. The flagship program, CCN News 8 is a newscast that is dedicated to providing coverage of truly local news, weather and sports for the Danville, Lewisburg, Milton, Watsontown and surrounding areas. You can watch co-anchors Chris O'Rourke and Britt Swartzlander and Ryan Wetzel on sports nightly, Monday thru Friday at 5:30 pm exclusively on CATV Service Channel 8 with replays at 10 pm and 7 am the next morning. And now, CCN News 8 brings you everything local now on the web. Click www.ccnnews8.com for your news, your coverage, your community.
Tuning into CATV Service's Channel 8 at other times, you might see the Danville versus Lewisburg Soccer game, Milton Harvest Festival Pops Concert, In Your Neighborhood with Jen Wakeman or perhaps the Watsontown Borough Meeting. You can also keep current of what events are happening in our area by watching the Community Calendar, also on Channel 8. This fall CCN - Your Community Cable Network is proud to celebrate 20 years of being in your community.
Just recently CATV Service was awarded the Central PA Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the year award for their commitment to customer service and to the communities it serves.
On Feb 18th, 2011 CATV Service was purchased by Service Electric Cablevision. Service Electric was founded by John Walson, who was the brother of Peter and is noted as one of the founders of the cable television industry. This reuniting of the cable family will result in few immediate changes for CATV Service and its customers; however, future enhanced cable services will include more digital channels, more HD channels and Video On Demand, as well as faster broadband Internet speeds. CATV Service is proud to have served the Central Susquehanna Valley for over 55 years and remains committed to providing quality products and local customer service because - our customers' community is our community too!
